Casa Barelas

1024 4th Street SW

Artists

Ellen Babcock and Christine Posner in collaboration with members of the Barelas neighborhood

Designed in 2014, installed in 2018.

The Casa Barelas project, completed in 2017, revitalized an historic mid-century gas station sign with colorful designs and dichos devised in a series of bilingual workshops with Spanish-speaking members of the Barelas community.

The former Filling Station on 4th street  was purchased by a longtime Barelas community activist and renamed the Casa Barelas. FOS completed a full revitalization of this sign, including: a repair of the sign body and reader board, development and installation of community generated artwork for the upper oval, fixing the motor that rotates it, and installation of new low-draw LED lighting. Vintage lettering was purchased for a community generated message posted on the reader board.
