Artist-poets Beca Alderete Baca and Sara Daniele Rivera

Revision was an exhibition of artworks by two Albuquerque artist-poets, Beca Alderete Baca and Sara Daniele Rivera. These signs were installed October, 2020.

This project engages with Albuquerque’s archived photographic history to create new work that evaluates, responds to, and expands institutionalized historical narratives. Rivera selected and intentionally cropped photos from the Albuquerque Museum Photo Archives, creating new compositions that alter the context and understanding of the original photo. Albuquerque poet Beca Alderete Baca wrote poetry inspired by these new images. Her words are paired with the imagery to offer a new lens into Albuquerque’s history.

The public placement of the signs gives the artists an opportunity to access the kind of visual power that advertisers have, and to use that power to experiment with shifting our cultural narrative. ‘Revision’ can be as simple as looking at something from a different perspective, and as radical as rewriting a dominant history. This project, in its iterations, will explore that spectrum in a time that calls for such open-mindedness.
