Who:
Artists Ellen Babcock and Raphael Gallegos with the Highland High marching Band
When:
2013
Where:
5400 Central Ave SE at the Trade Winds Center, former site of the Trade Winds Motel
What:
Artist Ellen Babcock initiated and directed a sunset public art event featured as the culminating event of the High Desert Test Sites 2013. The performance involved loosely choreographed performers and participants carrying LED illuminated props through a steel arch, all of which were created by Babcock. They traced the floor plan of the once swanky motel that used to be on the barren lot, accompanied by a high school marching band. Near the end of the event, they spelled out the name of the old motel - the Trade Winds - in semaphore as a way to try to being new vitality to this depressed area of the city.
